In a Lonely Place: Radio’s Matt Pinfield Recounts His Relapse Amid the Turmoil of the Pandemic

It was the beginning of last year, and radio personality and former MTV VJ Matt Pinfield was still on the mend from a major car accident. Crossing the street in Hollywood, he had been hit by a car going 40 miles an hour and immobilized for months. He also had suffered a torn retina. Then COVID came, and his sobriety of several years was compromised. Pinfield, who can be heard on L.A.’s KLOS every Sunday night, recounts his relapse and how he found a way back to recovery.

At the start of 2020, I was in a good place mentally. I had just hosted Rock in Rio and was really excited for the year. Then came news about COVID and the lockdown. Loneliness and isolation are the enemies of recovery, and for someone who’s social like me — I’d go to three to four concerts in an average week — I found it really tough.

A recently launched GoFundMe aims to support former MTV VJ Matt Pinfield as he enters a recovery center to improve his “physical and mental health.”

The beloved TV and radio personality, perhaps best known for his mid-Nineties stint hosting MTV’s alternative music program 120 Minutes, was hospitalized in 2018 after being struck by a car and suffering injuries to his head and leg. Chris Trovero, Pinfield’s friend and a collaborator on his interview show In a Lonely Place, helped organize the fundraiser to offset the cost of his treatment.

Several of Pinfield’s famous friends, including Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell and Goo Goo Dolls frontman Johnny Rzeznik, have already contributed to the campaign. Eight days after its May 10th launch, the GoFundMe has raised over $40,000 of its $50,000 goal.

“As you know, it’s been a crazy year and a half in my life and now it’s a crazy time in everyone’s lives,” Pinfield tells Rolling Stone in a statement. “Even with the strain of COVID put on everyone’s livelihoods, I’m beyond overjoyed with the amount of support that is coming in from everyone for my physical and mental health recovery. Thank you for all of your continued support and please keep the music in your heart!”

The Passion of Matt Pinfield

For over 30 years Matt Pinfield has graced the world of music via various platforms. You probably saw him on MTV as the host of 120 Minutes. Or heard him rocking the airwaves of numerous radio stations. Perhaps, you have had the great experience of seeing him DJ in person — either at the legendary Melody or around New York City? Or most recently on the west coast, hosting the 2 Hours with Matt Pinfield podcast.

As a fellow New Jersey boy, I have been lucky enough to cross paths with Pinfield on numerous occasions. It started at K-Rock in NY where I had brief stint to start my career. Then, I would bartend at a hole-in-the-wall rock club called Snitch and a few times a month, a good night would turn great when it was “Pinfield night” behind the turntables (we’re talking mixing in deep tracks like Soundgarden’s “Mind Riot”). Most recently, Pinfield was kind enough to contribute to my 25 years of Pearl Jam tribute, and will also be a part of a Chris Cornell special we have coming up. Each collaboration we’ve had has been full of mesmerizing music and full of inspiration.

In late 2016, Pinfield released a captivating book about his journey appropriate titled, All These Things That I’ve Done. Though the “things” have taken Pinfield on wild ride all over the country, the heartbeat of it all is simply music. It’s this burning passion for music that has allowed Pinfield to forge lifelong relationships, and naturally made him the most trusted and well-respected person within not only the world of show-hosting, but the entire music entertainment business.

I recently had the opportunity to re-connect with Pinfield, and again, he generously took me inside his unwavering process of staying true to yourself and allowing music to steer the way.

A self-described Uncle Fester look-alike with a voice like a “bullfrog with bronchitis,” Matt Pinfield somehow became one of the defining personalities of classic-era MTV (that is, when it still played music videos). Pinfield was oddly telegenic simply because he was so unabashedly autodidactic and always thrilled to be in the seat across from an unusually well-behaved Lou Reed or Oasis.

In the mid-’90s, Pinfield was all over MTV. He started hosting the network’s alternative program “120 Minutes” in 1995 and then branched out to helm an eclectic mixtape of shows: “MattRock,” “Pinfield Suite,” “Pinfield Presents,” “Rocks Off,” “Say What?,” “MTV Live” and more than 100 specials. He was the Matt of the “Total Request Live” segment “Stump Matt.”

Pinfield recently published a frank, funny new memoir, “All These Things That I’ve Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life,” named for the song The Killers wrote about him and co-authored with Mitchell Cohen.
